Back to real road racing

- Richard Springorum

ROAD runners were excited to get in some 'real' action during the Richards Bay Athletic Club's Fish Eagle trail run/ walk event at the Zululand Kayak Club (ZKC) early on Saturday morning.

After having to settle for virtual running events over a number of months owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, road pounders were pleased to get back into a competitive environment.

The event attracted 42 entries, which provided participants with a choice of competing in a 5km or 10km route.

This was the first leg of the six-part series, with the second leg taking place at the ZKC this Saturday.

Race three will take place on 15 May, followed by race four on 22 May, race five on 5 June and, finally, race six on 19 June.

The 10km race was dominated by speedsters Lindani Dube and Melanie van Rooyen, who claimed the men's and women's crowns in 48.18 and 48.40 respectively.

In the 5km event, John Lambrechts cruised home in 32.19 to take the men's title, with Jené van Aswegen picking up the ladies' title in 29.31.
