Stevens powers to surf ski victory

THE second leg of the popular Zululand Kayak Club (ZKC) Autumn Surf Ski Series was hotly contested at the ZKC on Saturday morning.

Twenty-four paddlers took to the water in Richards Bay and competed over 6.5km and 12km distances.

Mauritz van der Linde was rewarded for his hard work, winning the 6.5km short course race in a time of 40.07.

The long course event was a tight affair, which resulted in a sprint finish between Mike Stevens, Dirk Barnard and Brian Chedzey.

But it was Stevens who crossed the line first after a quick breakaway, clocking 54.42, with Barnard finishing second in 55.21 and Chedzey third in 55.23. The third leg of the series will take place on Saturday at 9am at the ZKC.

Leg four is scheduled for 15 May, leg five for 22 May, leg six will be held on 5 June and the final leg will take place on 19 June.
