NRB coach axed on brink of PSL D-day

- Dave Savides

IT’S got to be goals galore if Richards Bay FC are to power their way into a PSL promotionrelegation play-off place on Sunday.

They take on Steenberg United at the uMhlathuze Stadium in a game that is a must-win for both sides, but for different reasons.

The Cape outfit is battling to retain their GladAfrica Championship status after a dismal season, while NRB needs to overcome a single goal difference to edge past TS Sporting and into third place.

Steenberg will no doubt come out with all guns blazing, which could quite well play into the hands of the home team.

Steenberg’s aggressive style of playing will go up a few notches given their motivation to escape relegation and this could well see red cards being dished out.

NRB are also slick on the counter attack and will pounce on any unguarded defensive spaces left open.

The log positions, at both ends, show just how much is at stake.

But, such is the nature of soccer shenanigans that the real winners could be determined away from the playing fields.

It’s that time of the NFD season when the cheque book often has as much say as the form book, and the susceptibility and neutrality of match officials are tested to the full.

Added to that is the ‘favours’ done by other teams that personally have nothing to gain or lose, but can affect the log positions: either by playing their reserves or possibly via the brown envelope route.

On paper, TS Sporting should battle against Pretoria Callies…but who knows what might happen?

NRB can’t count on a positive result in that one, but by smashing in the goals on Sunday they can ensure their own destiny.
