Sister Nancy Wound Care Clinic is based in Richards Bay CBD, next to Virgin Active. She also operates at Life Empangeni Private Hospital, Senzelwisihe Rehabilitation Centre, and offers acute wound care services at Melomed Richards Bay and Netcare The Bay Hospital.

Sister Nancy qualified as a professional nurse in 2011. After completing a four-year nursing Honours degree (BCur Nursing Sciences), she gained experience at Wentworth Hospital’s Emergency Medical Unit as a midwife, as well as Netcare The Bay Hospital’s ICU. She then worked as a renal nurse at NRC, B Braun Avitum and Life Empangeni Private Hospital before being appointed as a unit manager for the medical ward at Melomed Richards Bay where she was part of the hospital commissioning team.

‘All this time, the love for wound care was developing and reverberating in the corridors of my heart. I then pursued studies in line with advanced wound care, stoma care and lympheodema management,’ she said.

‘I was appointed as a 3M/KCI account executive for the north coast region, with a portfolio in intensive wound management.’

‘I was waiting in line at a pharmacy one day when I saw a patient standing in front of me with an excessively swollen leg with a weeping wound. The patient lacked insight into his condition. That is when I realised that I should make advanced wound care services accessible to the public,’ she continued.

Sister Nancy said it is very important to consult with a qualified advanced wound care specialist in order to correctly diagnose and conduct a proper treatment plan.

Before any treatment can commence, Sister Nancy insists on a thorough diagnostic examination and intensive screening of the wound.

‘Wounds are treated based on the deviation of an anatomical structure. A selected dressing should ensure optimum wound healing,’ she explained.

Advanced wound care is very important, as it not only determines the patient’s recovery rate, but also affects their quality of life. If chronic or hard-to-heal wounds are not timeously treated or managed, it may lead to complications such as infection, necrosis and even amputations if not effectively managed.
