Plans afoot to build a hospital in Mtuba
THE Mtubatuba Municipality is engaged in discussions with Mondi to finalise a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to secure land for construction of a hospital.
Newly appointed municipal manager Thamisanqa Xulu said the talks were focusing on a land swap deal.
Mondi-owned land next to the tourism centre opposite the old taxi rank would be used for the hospital; with municipalowned land at Nordale considered for the exchange.
‘Mtubatuba is a big municipality which caters to a large number of people forced to travel to the Hlabisa or Ngwelezane hospitals,’ Xulu said.
‘This concern was raised at the recent Integrated Development Plan roadshows and several community engagements.’
He indicated that the current MEC for Health had committed to building a hospital in Mtubatuba. However, the department had not responded at the time of going to print.
Xulu also discussed plans for repairs following the recent floods.
During a local radio interview with Mtubatuba Mayor Mxolisi Mthethwa, a caller indicated that the rains had
caused serious damage to the roads in the Gugulethu area near kwaBhobhoza, as well as roads in the Mgababa area leading out of the KwaMsane township.
‘Roads in the entire ward were badly damaged by the rains, moving around is a serious challenge,’ the caller lamented.
Xulu indicated that the municipality’s programme of fixing roads throughout its wards will get under way next week.
Motorists are also alerted to the Easter road safety campaign which has been implemented with road blocks along the N2 to ensure road safety.
