City launches Easter road safety campaign
LAW enforcement agencies, interfaith community leaders and transport associations in uMhlathuze Municipality launched the #EasterRoadSafety campaign on Tuesday, 12 April.
Led by the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA), the programme promoted road safety ahead of the Easter holidays with a sermon and prayer held for the safety of all motorists.
Speaking at the launch, Tobias Gumede, the speaker of the City of uMhlathuze, pleaded with all road users to be cautious during the busy period.
‘There is nothing as painful as losing lives of South Africans during the Easter season. People are busy packing and getting ready to visit their holiday destinations and we understand that will cause a lot of traffic on our roads,’ said Gumede.
‘But we know that our brothers and sisters in law enforcement are always on the road to see to it that the rules of the road are obeyed,’ said Gumede.
Schalk Smuts, an owner and director of the Engen North Coast filling station, welcomed the launch of the campaign and gave members of law enforcement his best wishes.
‘It just goes to show how important the campaign is when we have the speaker present here. From our side, we support the Easter campaign and we hope it will be a huge success. One person who dies in an accident is one life too many,’ he said. Following the event, officials visited eSikhaleni families staying in community halls after losing their homes to the recent floods.
