Tronox donates R3m for KZN flood victims
TRONOX has donated R3-million to provide much-needed support to victims of recent flooding in KZN.
The heavy rains that wreaked havoc across the province last month caused great devastation in eThekwini Metro and the districts of King Cetshwayo, iLembe, Ugu and uMgungundlovu, with more than 400 people losing their lives and thousands displaced.
The donation by the world's largest vertically integrated Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) producer will be distributed to the Solidarity Fund Flood Response pillar, as well as Gift of the Givers.
‘Nothing could have ever prepared us for what we saw on 11 and 12 April.
‘This act of nature resulted in devastating flooding which destroyed roads, homes, businesses, schools and areas of worship.
As big business, we could not sit back and do nothing,’ said MD: Tronox South Africa and Saudi Arabia (KSA) Mpho Mothoa.
Mothoa said they hope the financial support will assist local communities to rebuild.
‘This tragedy came at a time when KZN had just recovered from the unfortunate events of the 2021 looting.
‘As Tronox, we are deeply saddened by the negative impact that the floods have caused in our province, and extend our heartfelt sympathy to those families who were left destitute as a result,’ he said.
‘In line with our value of honouring our responsibility to create value for our stakeholders, we believe this is one of the best ways to show our commitment not only to our government stakeholders, but to communities as they start rebuilding from this horrific event,’ said Mothoa.
