Rotary Club donates medical equipment
HEALTHCARE workers at Ethembeni Care Centre were taken aback when the Rotary Club of Richards Bay last week donated a truckload of medical equipment.
Wheelchairs, walkers, commodes and cushions were among the generous items handed over on Thursday at the centre's KwaMbonambi premises.
'We are excited and so appreciative of this generous donation,' said Ethembeni manager Sister Mavundla.
'This equipment will help our patients who are undergoing rehabilitation.
'Most of our patients are bedridden, so the wheelchairs will help in getting them outside in the fresh air, and the cushions will help those suffering with pressure sores.
'We have some patients with cerebralvascular injuries, and those who are unable to walk to the toilet.
'Through rehabilitation, the wheelchairs will help these patients wheel themselves to the toilet, while the commode will give them some dignity in that they will no longer have to wear adult diapers which have to be changed by carers,' she said.
Sister Mavundla thanked Rotary Richards Bay for identifying Ethembeni Care Centre in this donation, and said the items could also be used by patients who are discharged and have little to no assistance at home.
Speaking on behalf of Rotary Richards Bay, Arthur Gray said they were delighted this donation would be put to good use.
'This medical equipment came from Rotary in the UK, and the money we spent on getting it here was definitely well worth it,' said Gray.
'As representatives of Rotary, we do as much as we can to reach as far into impoverished communities as we can, and we are delighted this donation will be put to good use.'
