Hillside supports skills programme

IN an effort to boost critical skills and set the youth on career paths, Hillside Aluminium has partnered with education and training NPO ORT SA on a project to help learners improve their maths and science matric results.

The learners, who passed four of their matric subjects except mathematics and physical science, are receiving lessons free of charge at ZCBF in Richards Bay, to help them boost their marks in these critical subjects.

The one-year recovery programme aims to assist those wanting to further their studies and pursue careers in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields while preparing them for the working world.

'Learners who fail their matric exams due to failure in mathematics and science find that their options and choices in life after school are limited.

'These learners are at risk of not completing their school careers; an outcome with negative consequences not only for the learners, but also for their families and other people close to them.

'The prospect of a bright future suddenly becomes out of reach for most of them.

'Through this project, however, participants will be able to further their studies and follow their dream careers,' ORT SA said in a statement.

Pupils are exposed to intensive teaching of mathematics and physical science, as well as career guidance, basic computing, community work and a life skills work readiness programme.

Hillside has been ensuring pupils are fully equipped with, among others, learning material such as calculators, study guides and textbooks.
