Zululanders do their time on the line

- Conelia Harry

THE ninth annual ZO "Hang Out with Madiba" wash line charity drive was a resounding success.

Hundreds of bags of clothing and blankets, as well as non-perishable foods were collected at the wash lines which were erected outside the Richards Bay Civic Centre and at the ZO offices in Empangeni.

Zululanders came out in force to support the Mandela Day initiative, led by the Zululand Observer in partnership with the City of uMhlathuze and Rotary in both Richards Bay and Empangeni.

As in previous years, the Rotary Club of Richards Bay used the platform to distribute wheelchairs to people living with disabilities, which was done through the Nawe Zifunze Disabled Association in Mzingazi. Locals began pegging their donations on the line

from as early as 7.30am, and community members streamed in throughout the morning until midday to donate and spread some Madiba magic. South32 and Richards Bay police station erected wash lines at their premises, and encouraged their staff members to support the cause. Grantleigh and St Catherine's Interact pupils manned the lines in Richards Bay and Empangeni, while Netcare delivered a heap of items to the ZO offices in Empangeni.

Not to mention all the individuals and Rotarians who gave of their time and generously donated to the cause. All items collected are distributed to the region's needy through the ZO charity arm Dice (Do I Care Enough?).

Kloppers Inc also donated 350 jars of hope - a soup mix that can feed a family of four a hearty meal during our cold winter.

City of uMhlathuze councillors and staff donated several beautiful new blankets, while City Mayor Xolani Ngwezi and his wife Slindile Mbalenhle Ngwezi personally donated bags of clothing and pledged to give Dice half the proceeds of the sale of a cow. Addressing donors and supporters at the Richards Bay washing line, Mayor Ngwezi thanked all involved for their hard work in this worthy initiative. "We commend the Zululand Observer for leading this campaign, and editor Dave Savides for the contributions made, not only through your work but in such projects.

"We pledge to continue our support, and I challenge our councillors and employees to do the same next year," said Ngwezi.
