Yacht club gets down to business
THE Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC) has announced the launch of an exciting new social sailing competition for businesses.
As the name suggests, it will pit business crews being trained to race against each other – after being trained, with the additional purpose of introducing more people to the sport of sailing.
The competition is open to any company or group of individuals, comprising a skipper/instructor allocated to the team and between 3 and 5 team members.
Each team will receive at least 10 contact sessions with the instructor over a period of five weeks, to be followed by a schedule of racing against the other teams.
Training will cover topics such as safety at sea, boat introduction, boat handling, points of sailing and basic rules of racing. Each participant will receive a booklet containing all this information.
Racing will commence after the initial training phase on the basis of match racing – two boats against each other in a series of races, on a ‘round robin’ basis.
League points gained will determine who will compete in the finals on 16 December, followed by prize-giving, braai and live music.
Participants will receive a temporary ZYC access card for the duration of the league.
Teams will pay a fee of R6 000 per boat and R500 per team member, which will cover the instructor’s fees as well as incidental costs including fuel, team regalia and instruction material.
The ZYC will sponsor a development team from the club as well as a team from the uMhlathuze Sport and Recreation portfolio.
Entry forms will be available from the office: 035 7880256, www.zyc.co.za, or admin@zyc.co.za
