Borehole for Khula
SOME Khula Village residents have been offered respite from their water woes after a borehole was installed in the area.
The struggle for water for residents of the White City section of Khula Village near St Lucia was brought to the fore recently, after the tragic drowning of a two year old in a pit dug to access water.
The area’s councillor Ntokozo Mlungwana said an estimated 70 households will benefit from the newlyinstalled borehole.
“They used to buy water but now they can get it for free at any time of the day,” said Mlungwana.
The councillor thanked Ngiba Development PTY LTD for funding the drilling and installation of the borehole, which was done by Stanley Armstrong from St Lucia.
“We are also grateful for the work done by our local electricians who ensured the borehole is properly powered,” said Mlungwana.
The councillor said, to avoid having people queuing at the borehole, each person will be limited to 50 litres of water per time.
He said there are other parts of the section that still need to be serviced, so efforts to have boreholes installed in those areas were ongoing.
“There are water pipes at Khula Village, but the problem is that there isn’t enough pressure so in some sections water does not come through the taps. That is what needs to be fixed,” said Mlungwana.
He added that he has met with uMkhanyakude District Mayor Siphile Mdaka, who indicated that it was hoped that, with the involvement of Mhlathuze Water in the district following a ministerial directive, Khula Village would be assisted with alleviating its water woes.
Mlungwana said district municipal officials recently visited a reservoir in the ward to assess if it could be resuscitated to supply water to locals.
