Bay golfers take the title
RICHARDS Bay Country Club (RBCC) golfers extended their fine 2022 form when they won the KZN InterClub Frog division played on the south coast over the weekend.
The club entered three sides into the competition on the challenging courses of Southbroom, San Lameer and Port Shepstone: two in the handicapped Frog division and one in the Strokeplay B-division.
The B-division ended up with a tough draw and was played in the worst of the conditions on both days, the players struggling to get anything going.
The RBCC Frog team of Clive Kleinschmidt, Leon Loots and Robert Gouws put up a good fight but failed to qualify for the final day.
The second Frog team, headed by RBCC club captain Martin Mostert, led from the front, playing some amazing golf as they fought their way into the top four matchplay teams to compete for the Frog division title on Sunday at San Lameer.
In the morning games, Richards Bay were up against local rivals Umfolozi and a big battle emerged.
Johan Meeding put up a great fight but ended up losing his game, while Martin Mostert dispatched of his opponent with an 8/7 win.
This left it in the hands of Natie Coetzer to win his game for Richards Bay to move into the final. Natie pulled off the win on the 18th hole giving RBCC access into the final against Mount Edgecombe CC.
Mostert again got the job done early with a 3/2 win and went back to rally his troops.
Meeding was caught in another huge scrap, making it tough for his opponent but ending up on the wrong side of the result.
This left it up to Coetzer needing to win his game and with it the trophy. Natie dug deep and pulled off a 4/3 win, giving Richards Bay CC the Frog division title.
