Big boost for surfing in the Bay
ON a hot and windy summer day, the Community Surf Classic, powered by First Wave Surf School, took place at Alkantstrand Beach on Saturday.
It was great to see a surfing competition happening on the beach again after a good few years of dormancy on the contest side.
The surf was small and weak, with waves few and far between, but that did not diminish the enthusiasm of the 40 entrants who came down to battle it out for glory and some serious prizes donated by Ryd Brand and Bodyline.
The groms were frothing and cheering each other on, with families and spectators enjoying the day (while holding on to their gazebos!) as seasoned competitors rode against those in their first ever surfing comp - with just a terrific vibe on the beach.
An amazing 18 entrants competed in the U12 Division, enjoying the chance to show off their skills and watch the older crew in action.
Liam de Villiers took the Open Division, with Kate Britz winning the U18 contest and Maya du Plessis first among the U12s.
The aim of the event, and for future competitions, is to grow the sport of surfing in the area and expose the up-and-coming generation to competitive surfing.
In addition to regular contests, the organisers would like to see the local district surfing association up and running, sending surfers in their respective age groups to the SA Champs.
At the end of the day, surfing was the winner but there were also great prizes including cash, boards and surfing gear.
The Surf Alliance extended thanks to Gerrit Loots, family and crew, Neighbourhood Cafe, the sponsors, volunteer judges, assistants, lifeguards and all those who participated.
For those interested in developing the sport, there will be a meeting of the King Cetshwayo Surfriders Association at a date to be confirmed.
Anyone keen is welcome to attend. Keep an eye out in the local press and social media platforms for the date and time.
