Project prioritises skills transfer
LOCAL contractors are expected to benefit by no less than R4-million of the R18.5 million water project in Mthonjaneni local municipality. This was noted on Tuesday by King Cetshwayo District Municipality (KCDM) deputy mayor and chairperson of the technical committee, Skhumbuzo Dlamini upon announcing the contractors.
At the meeting, Dlamini said 30% of the projects are strictly dedicated to local contractors who will be working under the main contractor.
“One of the conditions in our contract with the service provider was skills transfer to the local unskilled and semi-skilled labour,” said Dlamini.
He emphasised that, when this project is complete, he wants to see local people able to work on their own.
This project will service wards 2, 3, 4, and 5 of Mthonjaneni in Mfanefile area where four reservoirs will be built, including a 2.5 megalitre reservoir.
“We want this project completed in its stipulated period. Therefore good working relations between the local leaders and our service providers are pivotal, so that 1 888 households will access water daily,” said Dlamini.
Resident Sinenhlanhla Myeni, who is happy with the water provision and employment opportunity, said: “After 10 wasted past years at KCDM, this is the first administration that has delivered on its promise.”
