Celebrating seniors and disabled communities

- Mbuso Kunene

AFTER being approached by elderly residents at a food parcel distribution earlier this year, Steven Mmindje, founder and director of AfriSoC, felt compelled to act.

Mmindje said senior citizens were concerned they were being overlooked and discriminated against.

So, on Tuesday, he hosted a celebratory event at Mandlazini community hall, which was attended by senior citizens and disabled residents in an effort to promote positivity.

Here, attendees received wheelchairs, walking aids, crutches, walking sticks, soccer kit, and clothing.

“Things are tough but as AfriSoC, we are positive and hope for the better,” said Mmindje.

“Being old or physically challenged doesn't mean you are nobody. It simply means you have seen it all, you are more experienced, and in a better position to offer advice.”
