Beloved doctor bids farewell after 4 decades

- Kaylene Louw

HANGING up his stethoscope is local GP Dr Hannes Naude after an inspirational career spanning over four decades.

A respected member of the community, he initially started practising in Richards Bay and Empangeni, but in 1986 made the bold decision to operate from Empangeni only.

With more than 41 years of experience - 37 spent in Zululand - he has seen many business partners come and go, but the one constant was his patients whom he loves.

Dr Naude has had the privilege of treating generations of families, from grandparents to parents and children.

A lover of knowledge, in 2000 he completed his Masters in Family Medicine at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine at UKZN.

Upon completing his course, he was offered a position at the prestigious establishment but decided to turn the offer down as his heart belonged in Zululand.

The GP is also a family man who shares three daughters with his lovely wife Welma.

Many changes followed in 2016, including a family move to Mtunzini and a business move from Sanlam Centre to his current surgery at 2 Logan Street.

Bearing the title of semi-retired for a while now, Dr Naude decided to spend a few years working in the public sector before hanging up his stethoscope for good.

His retirement plans are to move to Abu Dhabi with his wife, leaving his patients in the capable hands of the loved and respected Dr Rebekah Cooper, who shares the same love and passion for serving her community.

Before he bows out, Dr Naude and his family will be at the surgery on 13 and 17 May to thank all the Zululanders who have supported them over the years.

He started his career in medicine as a wide-eyed young man and leaves as a beloved makhulu, thanks to you!
