OBJETIVO: MAYOR COLABORACIÓN ENTRE SER HUMANO Y MÁQUINA
Objective: greater collaboration between humans and machines
At a time in which the concept of artificial intelligence is beginning to gain ground in automotive production processes, a series of questions that are difficult to answer arise, given that we still don’t know the reach of the capabilities of machines.
Will machines replace human activity? It’s too early to know. However, what is certain is that the production model is changing, above all, in the automotive sector. The company is dedicated to creating smart production plants in which people and machines
Omron coexist in harmony. In fact, they don’t want factories of the future to be made up of solely machines or robots. “We like to say that smart factories need smart and, as a result, highly qualified people”, they note. “Successful factories of the future are those that turn their operators into creators, as they have the most know-how on the process, know-how that is essential for adequately utilising what artificial intelligence can provide us with”. “We believe in Man and Machine instead of Man or Machine”, add Omron, “an issue that all of us must tackle”. The company believes that with artificial intelligence comes technology that will allow them to turn the data generated in production lines into valuable information for taking decisions in real time, for the purpose of predicting possible faults in advance to prevent unwanted plant stoppages with the benefits that that entails, or even to use said information for learning to improve the process through ma-
They are clear that, in the end, everything will always have to be supervised by people, that is, highly qualified people. With that in mind, Omron doesn’t believe that, with the implementation of robotic and automated solutions, the number of operators in a factory will decrease; quite the contrary. “In fact we can cite the example of Japan, which is one of the most industrialised countries in the world with a large fleet of installed robots, with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world. While it is true and this is what we are calling upon – that factories of the future will need professionals who are more advanced than current ones, with greater aptitude, and who are

“Let’s say that our vision points towards factories operated by humans, who have to evolve from being operators to being creators, since they are the ones with the most knowledge on the machine or the line, in a fully collaborative environment; and under no circumstances do we imagine factories operated solely by humans or machines”. When concepts such as artificial intelligence are APOCALYPTIC VISIONS talked about, “one tends to transmit visions that are to a certain extent apocalyptic, of a world dominated by intelligent machines”, says Xavier Segura, director general of Spain and Portugal, “but in reality we are dealing with tools with high potential that will

Esto, unido a importantes cambios sociales en el uso tradicional del vehículo, han de llevar claramente a la definición de nuevos y más sostenibles modelos de negocio”. few areas of production are we able to find relevant increases in automation that would bring about a considerable drop in the number of operators”. From their point of view, the technological increase in the industry will come from the more intense adoption of intelligent components that, through the analysis and management of intelligent data. This will allow for exponential progress in performance prediction, interconnectivity, monitoring, traceability and optimisation of processes, as well as operations, based on the demand of some markets requiring greater levels of customisation and small and variable batch production. Finally, Segura claims that the biggest challenge that the automotive industry is facing doesn’t concern so much the incorporation of automated technologies, “but the evolution of the sector itself in aspects such as autonomous cars or the use and mass industrialisation of new energies such as hydrogen and electrical energy. This, together with important social changes in the traditional use of vehicles, must clearly lead to the definition of new and more sustainable business models”.
