AutoRevista.- How was the collaborative robot model and the cobot concept created and when did it first come into contact with the
Up until quite recently the collaborative automotive industry? robot concept consisted of an operator working

Now our clients see that the concept has extended to a collaborative robot that goes beyond interaction with the operator in the implementation of the process, and is now easy to programme and set up and, above all, is fundamental for space utilisation. For the automotive sector we have completely autonomous applications such as screwing, in which we manage to compact space a great deal. This evolution has also been the result of internal learning, which we integrate thanks to what clients value from our contribution. Another interesting aspect is weight. Our largest robot, the UR 10, weighs less than 30 kilos. AR.- What are the main applications of collaborative robots in the automotive sector and what are those of
We currently work on three customary applications: the future? screwing, inspection and picking for manufacturers such J.P.- as BMW, Ford and Volkswagen, as well as for Tier 1 suppliers. Furthermore, we are addressing the challenge of interacting in the final assembly phase with the vehicle in motion, with control of the seventh axis at tracking level. We are also working with several clients in binpicking applications, in which the robots obtains the parts amidst a chaotic environment. AR.- It has been established that there has been a progressive increase in collaborative robots in manufacturers and large suppliers (Tier 1), but has there been
Our mission is to export the knowledge that we are similar progress in smaller suppliers and SMEs? generating in OEMs and large to other companies. J.P.- In comparison with traditional robots, use of collaborative robot is much more extensive in smaller supplier companies, machining centres, etc. We have cases of pick and place of parts for welding or arc welding operations, in which the robot contributes a higher level of awareness. AR.- In addition to efforts to continue innovating, Universal Robots pays particular attention to collaborative robots training. How is the Universal Robots Academy
We give the utmost importance to training, for programme going? which we use different tools. In Spain, for the purposes of J.P.- transferring the know-how of large companies to smaller ones, we organise different technological outreach events. We have held some of them in Barcelona and Seville and on 28 November we will hold one in Vigo. For the forthcoming event we have invited a great client based in the region, PSA Group Vigo, which will give a presentation on the implementation of our robots in their factory. We also invite technological centres and SMEs already using the technology. That

In addition to these events we offer units that provide a first-hand experience of the robots in operation. Of course, the Universal Robots Academy is fundamental so that our clients can break the barrier of access to robot programming without the need for prior specific knowledge. Overall more than 30,000 people have undergone training at the Universal Robots Academy and Spain is one of the countries with the highest uptake. We also offer face-to-face training with different focuses based on the needs of each client. We have created a community of engineers, Certified System Integrator (CSI), which works with Universal Robots technology for the purpose of addressing large-scale projects both in OEMs and Tier with guarantees. On 22 October we held the first meeting with 20 engineers from all over Spain, thus establishing a network of partners for the type of projects it addressed.
• AutoRevista plementation of the UR product. If changes are made to the manufacturing line or if it is conceived in a new way, the use of our robots doesn’t have to be changed. It adapts to possible changes in the production line much more easily than other solutions. In terms of electric cars, the use of robots in the assembly of batteries or other elements won’t effect us a great deal in comparison with the current situation. AR.- What kind of contribution to competitiveness do
In this regard, clients demand that the return on investment clients expect from Universal Robots products? in the projects in which we participate is around J.P.- one year, maximum a year and a half. These time frames are defined in order to be competitive and flexible to respond to the demands of the market. AR.- What percentage of activity and business volume does the automotive sector represent for Universal Robots internationally and within Spain? What is the Spanish automotive industry’s view on the use of cobots in
The automotive industry is Universal Robots’ main sector comparison with other countries? of activity and the first sector that we started working J.P.- with, although there are numerous opportunities beyond the sector in fields such as food and pharmaceuticals. Currently, 25% of our clients on a global scale are tied to the automotive industry, a figure that rises to 30% in Spain, due to the sector’s specific importance. In respect to the uptake of collaborative robots, we have certain clients who believe that they have arrived too late to introduce robotics. We always tell them that’s not the case and that it is about carrying out projects according to their needs. We try to make sure that, in all the projects that we are involved in, the client is realistic. From there comes our collaboration with engineers and a network of distribution partners. We sometimes prefer to be conservative so that the proliferation of technology in Spain continues to enjoy growth, which today stands at 70% per year. For us, it is very important that we advise our clients, conveying to them that we do not supply a product, but rather projects that are both simple and complex in collaboration with our network of engineering partners and technological centres.
