Integration of PLM and ALM from the initial stages
“A decade ago, software represented less than 20% of the cost of the vehicle and it didn’t really help to differentiate a model much. Now, 80% of all the product’s innovation and differentiation comes from a combination of software, electronics and electrical systems”, said Eduard Marfà, EMEA Marketing Director, Lifecycle Collaboration.
Marfá contends that the importance of the software becomes even more patent if we remember that, before 2011, it was unusual for even 5% of vehicles to be withdrawn for software problems. By contrast, in 2015, almost 15% of withdrawals are related to the software. In the face of this problem, the development of software must be closely tied to the other design and manufacture processes. PLM and ALM must be integrated from the initial stages. Another aspect is the complexity and variability of the vehicles, which is increasingly greater due to the market’s customisation demands but also the evolution of components and vehicles. “The rapid prototype will become the norm, shortening the development cycle of hardware. These trends will make the integration of the development of software and hardware with tools such as the digital twin even more important. Combining software testing with physical simulation can reduce the number of physical prototypes needed, as well as reducing possible problems and expenses”. End-to-end traceability allows you to go back to data sources to understand how and why certain problems
surgen determinados problemas. “For example, Ford was able to update a series of electronic control units that had software problems, without the need to replace the hardware. It did so because it perfectly controls which hardware and software components are used in a particular variant or series of vehicle programmes in each part of the world, even including the identification number of a particular vehicle. Over three years, this has allowed them to save 100 million dollars”. Marfá also notes that “a digital twin not only designs but also analyses behaviour from different perspectives. This collaboration centring on the product allows analysis times to be reduced and avoids errors due to a lack of communication. As it is applied in product development, the digital twin also enables the use of a virtual model for defining manufacturing processes and their subsequent simulation. It can be done from an operational level, all the way to the production line, even including simulation of the entire plant. This allows companies to take better decisions in an objective way”. A simulation using a digital twin also provides simulation functions for the processes and the plant. It enables a model of the whole plant or line to be represented, with the option of changing scenarios and parameters depending on needs or possibilities. “This way, companies can obtain significant benefits in asset savings and, above all, in the start-up time of their products”, said Marfá. In terms of recent trends, Marfá highlights “the importance of harvesting quality data that can report on a manufacturing process. Data is not just an end in itself: it must analyse it and extract the essence of the business. And this is where MindSphere comes into play. It is our open IoT system based on the cloud, which allows us to aggregate, analyse and transform the data into processable information that can be reported both to product development and production planning to create a completely closed decisionmaking environment for continuous optimisation”.
