An innovative and open ecosystem with a European hallmark
The last few months have been filled with intense activity for a Valencian automotive cluster, which has combined exciting proposals with current events marked by different news for the Ford Almussafes plant. The semiconductor crisis and the impact of the pandemic have reduced production volumes, but the award of a hybrid motor and the expansion of the battery plant activity have also been announced. In this regard, Mónica Alegre, president of AVIA, points out that “everything that means attracting new models and projects to the Ford Almussafes plant means generating business for the entire territory of the Community of Valencia. We understand that the Ford battery factory is a significant commitment of the brand for the Community of Valencia. There are many factors that support this position. We have a network of competitive, internationalised companies committed to the change to the new mobility model. Both in terms of decarbonisation and in the paradigm shift towards service. We understand that the manufacture of hybrid models is a transition towards the decarbonisation and electrification of the fleet and that the Ford battery factory is its commitment to Almussafes”. Alegre shows its confidence in the face of a progressive improvement in the sector “as vaccination progresses and society as a whole can

resume a normal life, vehicle sales recover and, therefore, production is being reactivated. It is true that, before the pandemic, we were already experiencing a change in model. However, you just have to look at the rental figures. Users and consumers want to buy and change cars, but given the uncertainty about which motorisation type to buy, they prefer to rent. At the moment in which all the uncertainties are cleared up, from the economic ones to those of the motorisation model, sales will recover. We are totally convinced. Additionally, automotive suppliers are exploring other markets and sectors

Thanks to the competitiveness of the sector and the operational excellence that is required, automotive suppliers are well received in many other sectors”. In order to encourage automotive companies based in the Community of Valencia to increase their business volumes with other OEMs inside and outside the Iberian Peninsula, AVIA has designed a new tool. “Now that the worst of the crisis has passed, at AVIA we have launched the AVIA Synergy project, an initiative that helps companies to generate networking among themselves and therefore reach new customers and new sectors”. “In addition, within the strategic plan that we are developing and that will soon be ready, we resume the relationship with North Africa through an associate who is already working on positioning Valencian companies among manufacturers with a presence in Tangier. We have regular meetings with other clusters that allow us to detect business opportunities for our associates. In addition, with the Mobility Innovation VLC (MiV) we have established relationships with entities connected with innovation, new business models related to the new mobility and we are deepening projects that improve from competitiveness to connectivity”. Specifically, the MiV is configured as the platform that unites and promotes future actions in the automotive and mobility in the Community of Valencia. Mónica Alegre emphasises that “the objective of the MiV continues to be to accompany companies in the transition towards the new mobility paradigm and to incorporate all kinds of entities that can contribute. It is about generating an open and innovative ecosystem. But, above all, for it to position the Community of Valencia in the European context to attract projects and investment that continue to generate wealth and employment. The MiV is open to the collaboration of a wide range of companies that, until now, because of the notion we had of the automotive sector, seemed alien to the sector. Now, new mobility is technology, innovation, mobile
In addition, recently, a new innovation manager has been incorporated, Jackie Sánchez-Molero “who has arrived to continue with the projects that we already had open and to land the ideas about mobility that had already been worked on previously”, says the cluster’s president. AVIA is also participating in the Valencian Battery Alliance, a project that seeks the implementation of a lithium battery gigafactory and an R&D centre that allows Spain and the Community of Valencia to consolidate themselves in the manufacture of electric vehicles. “The importance of this project is in the R&D centre that will allow other manufacturers and suppliers to have a reference centre. The great project that AVIA has presented together with a telephone and 5G operator is the First Industrial Park with 5G in Europe. For its development, we have launched a pilot project between the companies Fivecomm and Grupo Segura to carry out intralogistic tests in a Grupo Segura plant. Through 5G we have tested AGVs’ behaviour for the distribution of material”, explains Mónica Alegre. “The objective”, she adds, “is to convert the Juan Carlos I Industrial Park into the first 5G industrial park, which will imply cost reduction for companies, for the city council, ordering traffic, reducing pollution, and improving the entire logistics and connectivity system between companies and with the OEM. This project involves all the companies from the Juan Carlos I industrial park, the Management Entity, the OEM, and the City Council and can be extended to other industrial areas”. The cluster has also been involved in the Inndromeda project, which, Alegre underlines, “is fully aligned with the objectives of the Mobility Innovation VLC. Inndromeda responds to the needs of companies in digitisation and enabling technologies. And these elements are fundamental for the companies of the Valencian Community Automotive Cluster”. Finally, the president of the cluster considers that the location of a battery factory in the territory of the Community of Valencia is essential. A factory that could supply other OEMs, such as Stellantis in Figueruelas. At AVIA, together with the ITE and Nutai, we have developed a project for the recycling or reuse of car batteries, so we already have the solution to a collateral problem of the electrification of vehicles, which is the recycling of batteries. In addition, we believe that the northern expansion of the Port of Valencia is essential, as an essential tool for Valencia to remain competitive. The excellent location of the Port of Valencia and the axis that it constitutes with Sagunto represents an economic value that we should not underestimate. It is a value to take into account for OEMs and for other industries”.
