Zebra Lab

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

-

When Borja Izaskun and Cristina Burgos decided to open their own architecture studio, known as Zebra Lab, they did so with the aim of searching for new design solutions through a balance between traditional architecture and contemporary needs, techniques, and concepts. Today, this pair of entrepreneurs have an office in Pamplona and another in San Sebastián to offer urban design advice and carry out comprehensive remodels of houses and other types of real estate while also building new residential and service buildings.

Amongst their latest finished projects, noteworthy is the remodeling of a house in the center of San Sebastián. Its original distribution divided the apartment into small independent rooms that got their light from five glass doors with access to a large terrace.the idea of Zebra Lab was to create a large meeting place for the family, a kitchen and living room combination, by using the beveled corner of the building to allow the living/dining room to face three different directions, thus achieving light throughout the entire day.this room would be dividable with sliding doors made of glass and steel, thus taking advantage of the light and bringing the terrace inside the house.

Another of their most noteworthy and acclaimed jobs was artist Iñigo Manterola’s new studio in Zarautz. The project aimed to put life into a tired, worn warehouse with clear potential. Cristina and Borja wanted to emphasize the central themes of Manterola’s work: the brushstroke, organic forms, and the sea.this gave rise to the curve as a starting point to tackle the job. Thus, a curved wall was created to guide visitors throughout the building and its main spaces: the sculpture workshop, the painting studio, and the annexed rooms. To obtain a neutral, industrial feel, they opted for unfinished materials like seamless concrete floors and the walls coated in plaster. The painting studio, located on the upper floor, is accessed by means of a spiral staircase made in weathering steel that, combined with the artist’s sculptures and paintings, is one of the few objects that stands out from the warehouse’s neutral design.

Manterola’s studio design has once again proven that the excellent work of this laboratory for ideas is always guided by creativity, adaptability, effectiveness, and unwavering quality in execution. That commitment, combined with personal service for each and every client, is what is helping this architecture studio to secure more and more contracts. their next job, which is already underway and will be debuted this year, is the conversion of an estate located in Biscay into luxury apartments.we at BASQUE LUXURY can’t wait to see how this new project turns out.
