Miguel Balliache

ARTIST

-

Miguel Balliache is going to be one of BASQUE LUXURY’S main players of the year.this is because, beginning in February and until the beginning of next year, we are hosting an exhibition dedicated exclusively to the work of this Basque-venezuelan artist at BASQUE LUXURY STUDIO (Calle Portuetxe 63, San Sebastián). The collection of art, composed of the latest paintings and sculptures by Balliache, is open to the public daily by appointment. Additionally, we offer those interested the possibility of having a private meeting with the artist to get to know his work firsthand.

The energy and unruliness of his work caught our eye from the moment we first saw his paintings at Okako Hotel in San Sebastián, an establishment that features his art in all its rooms and common areas. In 2017, we added one of his most important pieces, Cabeza-perro (Dog-head), to the BASQUE LUXURY art collection, which contains work by the most noteworthy Basque creators of the moment.

Surely due to his Venezuelan origin, Miguel’s universe differs drastically from much of the traditional Basque plastic art. His language –rich and original– is based on materials that he finds in the street (string, iron, sticks) and in nature, giving them primitive forms.when confronting the canvas, he does so in a harrowing, striking way – the result of deep introspection formulated in a tremendously eloquent way.

His expressionist universe is also enriched by the different realities that surround him: Balliache spends the year between San Sebastián, Miami, and Caracas. The first is the city where he resides and in which he has his studio. Miami is the city where most of his collectors are located; thus, he often has to go to different events and meetings there, especially during Art Basel. In Caracas, his hometown, he organizes different activities and exhibitions throughout the year, allowing him to maintain a special connection with a creative society that has watched him develop and grow as an artist.

Balliache’s exhibition at BASQUE LUXURY STUDIO, entitled Entre dos mares (From Sea to Sea), emphasizes the importance of one’s roots and the places through which one passes when constructing the self. The two places that make up his self, America and Europe, are the two seas of the same ocean, powerful and immensely creative, a non-place called art.
