“The City ofwine”is how Marqués de Riscal is colloquial­ly known. It is a luxury complex consisting of a five-star hotel designed by Frank Gehry, a Spa Vinotherap­ie® Caudalie, event rooms, a centennial winery, a shop, a cafeteria, a roast house, a wine bar, a gastronomi­c restaurant, and a traditiona­l restaurant.

The establishm­ent’s winery, Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, dates back to 1858 and is the oldest of Álava and precursor to the current way of producing wine in the region – a technique imported from France. Next to its entrance is the recently opened Asador Torrea, which offers traditiona­l cuisine from the La Rioja region in an informal setting. It is an ideal place to enjoy grilled meats accompanie­d by fresh vegetables, while being outdoors.

The hotel building, designed by Frank Gehry, houses the other two restaurant­s: the Marqués de Riscal Restaurant and the Tradición 1860 Restaurant, as well as the establishm­ent known as Vinoteca & Bistró – a wine bar overlookin­g the town of Elciego where you can discover all the labels of the historic winery. The Marqués de Riscal Gastronomi­c Restaurant, awarded a Michelin star, presents the perfect fusion between traditiona­l cuisine and modern flair paired with a wine list featuring labels from all over the world. Led by Francis Paniego, the restaurant serves dishes as ground-breaking as green asparagus with imperial caviar and mushroom mayonnaise, roasted Norway lobster with marinated pork ear and sea lavender,and roasted pigeon with grapes in red wine, accompanie­d by grains and a cannellone. The Tradición 1860 Restaurant specialize­s in healthy dishes from Basque and Riojan cuisine, such as vegetable stew and grilled turbot, all prepared with fresh, in-season ingredient­s.

There is no other place in the entire region that offers such a rich gastronomi­c variety as The City of Wine. Being able to visit its winery and drink its wine (with interestin­g labels like Barón de Chirel and Frank Gehry Selection 2012) accompanie­d by the creations of Francis Paniego in a unique building like that of the hotel is a true, five-star enogastron­omic experience.
