Electioneering tax cut claim

-

News Staff Reporter FOLLOWING a majority decision to reduce local taxes by Campello council, the opposition EU party has called the move an electioneering stunt aimed at capturing votes ahead of next year's local elections.

The motion to reduce taxes on vehicles (IVTM), building (ICIO), the cemetery service and licences to occupy public land was backed by the ruling Partido Popular, the PSOE, Bloc and Iniciativa.

PSOE spokesman Pepe Varó said that the fiscal pression on residents should have been relieved years ago, especially when it comes to IBI tax but up until now the PP rejected every proposal that was put forward.

He added that although it could be argued that this is just an electioneering stunt, the reduction in local taxes will be very much welcomed by residents.

Bloc councillor Benjami Soler said that it has come too late for many families in Campello adding that there should be elections every year in order for the PP to keep taxes down.

Sr Soler added that these reductions could have been made much earlier and in the case of refuse collection the actual drop in the tax is insignificant and it should have been much higher.

The spokesman for Initiativa, Noemí Soto, said that each year the PP has proposed tax rises and we have always been against them and although this reduction is blatant electioneering it will at least be of some benefit to residents and we could not oppose it on that basis.
