Elche FC bribery investigation

- By Alex Watkins MANCHESTER

City goalkeeper Willy Caballero has alleged that he was the subject of an attempted bribe when he was at Málaga last season before the team played against Elche.

The Argentinean played for Elche FC between 2004 and 2010 before signing for Málaga and then being bought by Manchester City in July for €8 million. According to Elche manager Fran Escribá: "It seems to me to be a good thing that Willy reported this possible attempted bribe to the league.

"I would also like whoever made this offer to be reported, if it is known who they are, because there are too many of these people in football."

He commented that he is prepared to put his 'hand in the fire' for his club and his team and repeated his willingness to collaborate with the league to clear up what happened and who is responsible.

Elche won that game in Málaga 1-0, putting them on 39 points with two games left of the season, which virtually assured their survival in the top division.

Málaga were already safe on 41 points when they played the match. Elche confirmed they would stay up the following week with a 0-0 draw at home against Barcelona.

A week ago the club issued a press release claiming it did not know anything about the investigation and its president, José Sepulchre assured they would collaborate to clear up what happened and defend their image.

According to top Spanish newspaper El País, goalkeeper Caballero reported that he had received a phone call from an 'intermediary', who offered him money in order to let in goals. By Tom Cain DESPITE being excluded from the government's 2015 budget, the stalled project to build a bypass in Benissa could soon get underway after it was announced that private investment would be used.

A spokesman for the public works ministry in Madrid said that a proposal to adopt the socalled 'German method' which envisages the company that has been awarded the contract financing it until it is completed then the government will pay them has been put forward and consultations are now taking place.

This system has been designed to keep costs down and prevent overspends.

For users of the N-332, the Benissa bypass cannot come soon enough. At peak hours traffic jams cause long delays for both residents and those passing through the town.

The project to build the bypass was started some years ago but after some initial work it ran out of funding and nothing has been done since.

Another problem for the public works ministry concerns the expropriation of property along the route of the bypass.

Many people who stand to lose land have still not been paid and until this happens the project cannot proceed.
