Alicante Golf, October 1 Today was the first of the Captain's Stableford events and the threat of rain was with us most of the day, even though there were some bright periods where the sun shone. Luckily, we did escape the falling down wet stuff, but many found the golf ball snagging wet stuff on this 'hidden jewel' of a golf course designed by the one and only Seve and it is pleasing to report that everyone managed to find the course albeit two or three had to go to the hotel to ask the way to the entrance. The course had been through its 'high season' preparations and the fairways recently had the hollow tiner going up and down. As is normal for this time of the year, the greens were on the slow side but in good condition and there were some decent scores recorded. The results on the day showed that, at long last, the Gold mob fared better than their Silver lads (and lasses) and Matthew Taylor needed 34 points for 4th spot. 36 points is normally enough to win the Gold Division, but not today and Kenny Hunter had to be content with 3rd place with this score. There were two 37's recorded and Captain Steve Higgins lost out to Bill (I need more shots) Starkey on the count back. The Silver boys (and girls) fell off a little and it only needed 30 points for Graham Smith to claim 4th place. Sandra Twentyman took 3rd place with a tidy 34 points and once again, the Belfast Bandit (Ernie Wilson) took his place on the podium with 35 points. John Hillier took top slot in this Division with 36 points. Those that know this course are aware that there are 6 par 3's and we, TMGS, reward the NTP's with a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels and today, we gave away 6 sleeves to those lucky enough to hit the sometimes very long greens and those lucky ones today were Bill Starkey, Joe Dean, Steve Higgins, Steve McGuinness, Dave Jones and John Hillier. The Twos pot was won by Joe Dean and Alan Rickers who both secured their 2s on the 17th and took the dosh which was also a rollover from last week. We also reward the 'best guest' with a Society towel and a sleeve of balls went to Dave Jones (playing off of 5) with a nice 34 points.
