Season 2014/2015 (Winter League)

Sponsored by Cartridge Direct & HR Services, Moraira

Match number 3 was on September 17 our winter league programme, and was held on the river Jucar on section B2. As we left Moraira we had a nice temperature of 22 degrees at 5.45am. The forecast for the rest of the day was for sunshine, so we knew it was going to be very hot for our competition. This area is still in need of some heavy rain to 'kick start' the river and get some flow back into it to make the fish start feeding again.

We all met in the 'Bar Ritmo 'in Favara at 8am for our normal coffees and chat, and on this occasion, we managed to get 12 members to attend. As we leave the bar to reach the river, we pass through the rice fields, which are still being flooded with the water from the river. This means the river level is still low. When we reached the river, we found the water colour was perfect and there was only a light wind. The down side was that there were no fish feeding on the surface, which is not good for our members who like to use their feeder float rods.

The klaxon was sounded to start our five hour match at 9.50am and all of our members started with their feeder rods to catch the carp on the bottom of the river. After the first hour, there were not many carp in our nets, so we knew there would be no big weights. News came down the river bank that Vic Wills on peg 2 was catching some nice sized carp using his feeder float rod method.

During the day, the wind changed and became stronger and upstream, which is not good for some of our members. Towards the end of the match, the temperature had risen to 36 degrees.

We ended the match at 2.50pm, and we must report that we had one dry net on peg 10, but no lost or broken rods or poles. The results were as follows: 1. Victor Wills (Special Groundbait) Peg 1 31 fish 26.36 kg 2. Malcolm Sprawson (The Sprog) Peg 12 19 fish 14.90 kg 3. Ian McClelland (Plastic Mac) Peg 6 15 fish 14.09 kg 4. Raymond Craig (The Heron) Peg 11 8 fish 9.59 kg 5. Rob Coppin (Snapper) Peg 2 6 fish 7.27 kg 6. Chris Barnsby (Buzzie) Peg 9 7 fish 6.81 kg 7. Frank Povey (The Poacher) Peg 4 4 fish 6.40 kg 8. Bill MacPherson (Black Mac) Peg 8 4 fish 5.50 kg 9. George Savell (The Gas Man) Peg 7 3 fish 5.40 kg 10. Jack Janssen (Special Corn) Peg10 1 fish 2.18 kg 11. David Barber (Sun Bed Man) Peg 3 1 fish 1.36 kg There were 2 nice carp caught during the match, and the biggest - at 3.40kg - was caught by George Savell. A close second was caught by Malcolm Sprawson at 3.36kg. This section of the river produced a total weight of 100.27kg.
