Gay-friendly apartments project for Campello's Coveta Fumà

- By Joe Wickman

AN INTERNATIONAL business has contacted Campello town hall with the intention of building up to a thousand apartments and a luxurious hotel orientated towards homosexuals in the town's Coveta Fumà area.

Specifically, initial plans have the project being undertaken on the plot of land known as Las Lomas, an area that has remained untouched until now, even though it has been classified as urban land for several years.

The company, composed of British and North American investors, is willing to invest €150 million in this venture, and has asked the four governing political parties for help in order to get the necessary paperwork in order as soon as possible, a proposition which has been accepted - albeit with scepticism by the opposing PP, who reportedly found out through the press and will wait for more details to surface before making an official statement.

Although no formal project has been presented as of yet, leaked information suggests it will take up an estimated 800,000 square metres of land, and will not be affected by the recently passed Pativel coast protection plan because the land was purchased before the legislation was made official.

A team of investors met up with governing representatives last month to inform of their intentions, a meeting which mayor Benjamí Soler said went well, and added that 'I think the project is good for the town' while admitting that there is nothing set in stone at the moment.

If the project goes ahead, building works are expected to begin towards the end of 2017.
