Police watching the waters in popular yacht spot

- By Jo Pugh jpugh@cbnews.es

FOLLOWING the detection of a small amount of raw sewage and subsequent temporary closure of El Portet beach, Moraira has presented a new local police boat which will regulate the number of anchorages, publicise the existence of ecological buoys for the care of Posidonia on the sea bed and control discharges into the sea to avoid possible contamination.

Another role of the boat will be to take part in incidents and rescues in the area.

Although the council are waiting to receive the documentation and final authorisation for the vessel, a special tempor- ary permit was obtained so it could be put to sea straightaway.

The boat was donated by Gonzalo Mengual, managing di- rector of local company Nautica Mengual. “It is beneficial for all people to have a service of this type and therefore I consider it necessary to support projects that are focused on the common good.” he stated.

Carlos Linares, mayor of Teulada-Moraira, thanked the company for providing the boat, and the Moraira yacht club for its mooring. “It is important to publicise this service which will be available to everyone, so that they can call the boat out if there is an incident.” said Linares.

A police officer who holds a navigational licence will be in charge of the vessel, and will be accompanied by either another officer or a civil protection volunteer when it is on duty.
