Abused and abondoned dogs rescued

-

A GROUP of abused and abandoned dogs were rescued by Alicante local police last Wednesday, one of which turned out to be owned by a resident of Santa Pola.

According to city hall, there were 15 dogs being kept in a warehouse in Pla de Vallonga industrial estate, which was full of scrap metal, rubble nd faeces.

Not only were there signs the dogs had been abused, four of them were puppies that were still suckling..

A resident had heard bark- ing and called the police, who had to break the padlocks to get in

They were almost all hunting dogs, mostly Brittany spaniels and short-haired pointers.

A microchip in one of them identified a man in Santa Pola, who admitted it was his, and the officers took the dogs to the animal protection service.

Councillor for animal protection Marisa Gayo visited the warehouse and said that some of the dogs had a stump, deformities and other problems. They all had many fleas and ticks and seemed to have been kept ‘in these terrible conditions for quite a long time’.

She praised the police for having spent four hours at the scene until they could rescue all the animals, which were ‘clearly traumatised’.

The councillor is fostering the four puppies herself until they can be put up for adoption.

Anyone who finds a stray animal in the municipality of Alicante can call the animal protection service 24 hours a day on 659 045 593 or visit the municipal shelter on the Camino Elche Viejo from 10.0014.00 and 17.00 to 19.00.
