Torrevieja tennis tournament celebrates its 40th anniversar­y

Over the course of eight days, August 4- 12 , Ciudad de Torrevieja tennis tournament celebrated 40 years a the tennis club in Torrevieja.

Over 250 participan­ts took part in 18 different categories with spectators every day, and with a very high standard of play the competitio­n finished on Sunday night with some fantastic matches in the finals.

The trophy ceremony was presented by vice president of the club and tournament director, Sr Humberto Zuleta which he begun by talking a little about the history the club and the creation of the tournament.

Also present were President of the Valencian tennis federation (FTCV), D. Antonio Martínez Cascales and colleagues Pedro Muñoz and Mory Azahar along with various other tennis club representa­tives.

Prizes awarded were in cash to the sum of €3,600 for the ‘seniors’ and €2,000 worth of sports equipment for all the finalists of the category ‘promesa’.

Winners in the absolute category were Zakhar Trapezniko­v (men’s) and Jimar Gerald (ladies) both receiving, what is now a tradition for the cham- pions, a salt ship (barco de sal). Runners up were Felipe Stepanov and Lara Panfilova.

All sponsors, collaborat­ors and volunteers alike, without whom the event would not be possible, were thanked with a mention that with their help over the years the event has become one of the most important tennis tournament­s in the region.

Margarita and Alfred Kuhn, parents of Nico Kuhn, one of the most promising stars of world tennis, were also at the event as well as María Nubia Forero, president of the NGO Asila.

A donation of non-perishable food products was also presented to Concha Sala, president of ‘Alimentos Solidarios’ (a charity food organisati­on).
