Sales of wine in the province rise by 10.5%

SALES of wine produced in Alicante rose by 10.5% for the 2017-2018 campaign, it was revealed this week.

A spokesman for the protected designation of origin (PDO) area for Alicante province said this confirmed the ‘continued recovery of wine production’ in the area.

He revealed that international sales had seen the largest rise – up by 15% on the previous year, representing 28.2% of the total.

The figures for Spain were up by 8.7%, which is 71.8% of the total.

The spokesman explained that this equated to 106,236 hectolitres (hl) for the home market and 41,556 hl which are being sent abroad.

He added that they are aiming to increase sales in Spain – and prioritise the local market.

“We want to be a reference point for sustainable commerce by producing and selling in this area,” he said.

The spokesman noted that they were able to record the excellent figures – even with a reduction in production at the start of the campaign due to a poor harvest.

The protected designation of origin covers vineyards in most of Alicante province including the Marina Alta, Marina Baja, El Comtat, L’Alcoià, Alacantí, Vinalopó Alto, Vinalopó Medio and Vinalopó Bajo.

The vineyards around La Mata salt lake in Torrevieja are most recent addition.

Many of the bodegas can be visited and information is available in English at the PDO website at www.vinosalicantedop.org
