Calpe landmark to return soon

Restored sculpture to grace roundabout

- By Jo Pugh

AN ICONIC sculpture which will be placed on the roundabout at the entrance to Calpe will cost €25,000 to restore before it can be placed into its new position.

Cosmos 62 is a sculpture by Andreu Alfaro, who passed away in 2012. It was being exhibited at the Valencia Institute of Modern Art (IVAM). It was originally owned by José Huget, a builder who developed the area to the north of Calpe, known as Calpesa.

The sculpture was located on the main road near the petrol station, and remained there throughout the early 1970’s and early 1980’s.

After that time, it was sold to the Institute, where it remained on display to the public. Councillors met with Alfaro’s heirs last year to explain their desire for the return of the sculpture, and the family, agreeing that it should be placed back it its original position, said they were willing to lend a different sculpture to the institute in return. IVAM agreed that the sculpture could return to its original home. It will be lent to the town for a minimum of five years.

When it was in place some thirty years ago, it was subject to graffiti, which needs to be removed. Also, exposure to the elements has affected its condition. Calpe council has agreed to its restoration costs, and transport to Alicante from Valencia, where it is currently undergoing cleaning and repair.

It is now only a matter of time before Cosmos 62 returns to Calpe.

An artist’s impression shows how the striking emblem will look.
