Trunk road and new bridge for Calpe

- By Jo Pugh

TWO NEW roads are to be constructed in Calpe to ease traffic flow through the town. Both have been agreed and subsidised by Alicante provincial council.

The first project is the expansion of what is currently known as ‘Road J, section 1’. This section starts at the roundabout on Avenida de la Generalitat and ends at Gargasindi. The opening of this section of the J road, which will be renamed Felipe VI avenue, will connect Avenida de la Generalitat with an existing roundabout at Casanova via Gargasindi. This will join the N332, and will allow traffic to pass from the beaches to the main road without having to queue at the many roundabouts in the town.

The cost of the project amounts to €1,015,944.39, of which the provincial council will contribute 75%, equivalent to €761,958.29. The remaining 25%, estimated at €253,986.10, will be funded by Calpe council. The works must be completed before 1 December 2019.

The other project is the construction of a bridge between the Barranco Pou Roig and Avenida País Valencià, a point that will connect the entire sports facilities in the town. These works have a grant from the provincial council for €394,703.23, with the council contributing €39,710,23.

The mayor, and president of Alicante provincial council, César Sánchez said, “These works will definitely modify the road network of the town, improving the mobility and accessibility of our people, so it is important we have received this investment of more than one million euros from the provincial council. These works will make it possible to connect sports and school areas, avoid traffic jams that occur in summer and improve the quality of life of the residents. We are working to solve the problems of our population and improve quality of life.”
