Used coffee capsules needed for world's biggest mosaïc

MUSICAL heritage and protecting the planet from plastic waste could get Dénia into the Guinness Book of Records – but they need your help.

In a joint effort between the council and delicatessen group Melic, Dénia wants to create a giant mosaïc out of Dolce Gusto coffee capsules depicting the face of one of the town's most famous homegrown artists.

Tenor Antonio Cortis was born in the Marina Alta district capital and performed worldwide in some of the globe's best-loved operas – in fact, Dénia held a series of official presentations and tributes to him in 2017 to mark what would have been his 125th birthday year.

The mosaïc of his face will need over 12,300 used coffee capsules to create a finished piece of 31 square metres – about the size of the floor space in a small one-bedroomed UK flat.

Enough black capsules have already been collected, but all other colours – white, grey, light brown and dark brown – are still needed.

You can drop yours off at the Social Centre near the station, the Casa de Cultura, the youth centre on the Ronda Muralles near the castle walls, or at the shop Melicatessen on the Avenida Miguel Hernández.

Once amassed, the capsules will be turned into the mosaïc in full public view on the C/ La Vía, and a notary will be there to certify it as the largest coffee-capsule portrait on record.

It will then be fixed to the north face of the Casa de Cultura.

Any surplus capsules will be given to the Marina Alta Solidària federation, which sells them on for recycling purposes to raise money for local charities.

The singer's descendants are said to be 'thrilled' with the idea.
