Javea Green Bowls Club

-

Early Easter Mixed Triples, March 28-30

Twenty-four teams, including teams from local Clubs, took part in 3 days of glorious bowling weather. They were split into 4 groups of 6 teams and played a Round Robin tournament of 5 matches to see who would rise to the top of each group. Each match comprised 10 ends and competition was fierce, but at the end there could only be 1 winner per group.

Group A cream of the crop were the ‘Phantom Flyers’, namely Nigel Thomas, Betty Anderson and Peter Carrigan who were pitted against Group B winners ‘Carwood’, comprising Phil Woodhead along with Dave and Yvonne Carvath, in a knockout for a Finals place.

In Group C, ‘Efor Clefor’, Velia Wood, Trefor Evans and Clive English, rose to the top spot and fought their semi-final bout against Group D winners ‘KeKeDee’ made up of Keith Hamilton, Ken Varney and Dee Hamilton.

‘Carwood’ prevailed against the ‘Phantom Flyers’ with a win of 12 shots to 4. ‘KeKeDee’ had a much closer tussle against ‘Efor Clefor’ but managed to edge it by just 1 shot, final scoreline being 11 shots to 10.

It was now time for the two sets of finalists to square up to each other, both teams very keen to get their hands on the Trophy.

‘KeKeDee’ edged to the front with shots of 7-2, ‘Carwood’ dug deep but going into the last end were still 5-9 shots down. ‘Carwood then got 4 shots on the Jack and were suddenly in with a shout, but ‘KeKeDee’ Skip managed to wiggle a shot through to get second wood, a fabulous shot which won them the bout by 9 shots to 6 and gave them the tournament and the trophy. Well done that team, very worthy winners, commiserations to the runners-up.

There were three main sponsors of this event, in no particular order, Webster Asesores, John Taylor Luxury Estate Agency and Anton Abogados. To present the various cash prizes and the trophy, we were fortunate to have Clive Webster, M.D. Websters Asesores, and from John Taylor Luxury Real Estate, Dimitri Castro Hanotel. Firstly, the beaten semi-finalists were presented with their prizes. The plucky runners-up, ‘Carwood were then presented with their generous cash prize and then the main event, to the Winners the Spoils, namely a healthy cash sum and the all-important trophy, hearty congratulations to team ‘KeKeDee’. Many thanks to our sponsors for their support and generosity.

Whilst the finals were in play, a tapas buffet was passed around for all to enjoy. Many thanks go to Jan and her team. No tournament is successful without a lot of hard work behind the scenes, a big well done and thanks were given by club President, Joe Schulein to competition secretary, Keith Hamilton and wife Dee who have done such sterling work for the club.

Javea Green Win Fed 4´s Play-off Final

Having won the Northern section of the LLB Fed 4s´ competition, Javea travelled to Bonalba to play San Luis, the winners of the Southern section.

The weather was perfect for bowls and Clive Englishs´ team raced into an 8-0 lead after just 3 ends. Unfortunately despite some great bowling from our team, the opposition could not be stopped and Javea only managed to win 3 of the next 14 ends, eventually going down 11-17.

In the early stages of Derek Eldons´ match the scores were really tight and we were tied at 6-6 after 5 ends. From then on our team eased away and won 8 of the next 12 ends to record a 21-11 win.

The last match saw Chris Evans' team level at 3-3 after 5 ends and 8-7 up after 10 ends. A great finish to the match saw our team storm away to win by 18-8.

So, with 2 wins to 1 the Fed 4s´ title was ours! The presentation of the trophy took place and our captain, Jack Wardrop, thanked San Luis for a great match, Bonalba BC for their hospitality, our Squad for performing so well throughout the competition and last, but not least, our band of travelling supporters for their encouragement throughout the final.
