Calpe clouds had a silver lining
Water wells fill-up...and so did hotels
THE POSITIVE side of the biblical rain was noted in Calpe on Tuesday, when the town hall announced that there is now enough water guaranteed to supply the town for the whole year.
The company responsible for water management, Aguas de Calpe, stated that the Lucifer well, located in the Vall de Laguar, and Calpe's main supply of water, is at the maximum of its reserves.
The Vall de Laguar registered around 400 litres per square metre during the four days of intense rain.
The news relieves fears of supply cuts, as levels had been considered to be on the verge of a drought situation.
However, Aguas de Calpe reiterated that they advocate responsible water consumption, and they are continuing to work on the renewal of pipelines and the optimisation of systems to make consumption more efficient, in addition to other projects such as the desalination plant at Barranc Salat.
Hotels almost full
With hotel occupancy almost full last weekend, and only the bravest deciding to go for a walk along the promenade, businesses flourished in the old town as Easter visitors sought alternative activities.
Restaurants and bars were extremely busy, and the most popular tourist hot-spot was Calle Puchalt, the location of the ‘Spanish Steps’ which began trending on social networks.
The attractive cobbled street, in a typical Mediterranean style, can sometimes be missed if you are passing by from above and is relatively hard to find. Photographs of the patriotically painted steps soon spread on social media, proving that the coastal resort has plenty more to offer than just beaches.
