Benissa’s big fiesta begins

THE FIRST of the fiestas in the Marina Alta begins this week, starting with the Fiesta of the Puríssima Xiqueta in Benissa. From the beautiful dresses to nights of rock music, there is something for every member of the family to enjoy.

FRIDAY, APRIL 26

21:00: Music parade with the fiesta committee with the Xirimiters Pere Bigot group and multiple music bands. 22:00: Meeting of the authoritie­s and fiesta queens from other neighbouri­ng towns in the main square.

22:30: Coronation of the children and adult fiesta queens 2019 in the main square.

At the end of the coronation, the celebratio­ns will continue with the music band MITO in the church square.

SATURDAY, APRIL 27

08:30:Worship to pay tribute to the patron

Xiqueta.

11:00: Bouncy castles for children in the children’s park. 13:00: ‘Entrada de la murta’ (along streets strewn with myrtle) accompanie­d by music. 18:30: Evening Mass and bell ringing.

19:00: Meeting at the convent square of the participan­ts for the flower offering to begin the parade to the parish church with dancers and music. 00:30: Firework display 01:00: Grand show - Tribute to Descanso Dominical of Mecano. 02:30: The music band La Pato perform. saint, Puríssima

SUNDAY, APRIL 28

08:00: Bell ringing and firecracke­rs with music through the streets.

08.30: Holy mass.

10:00: Music parade with the Xirimiters Pere Bigot group and music bands from the area. 11:30: Solemn Mass and sermon in honour of the Puríssima Xiqueta.

14:00: Mascletas (loud firework bangers)

19:00: Holy Mass and lowering of the image of the patron saint. Later, solemn procession in honour of the Puríssima Xiqueta. At the end, fireworks to music show. After the fireworks, festivitie­s go on with the ‘Fanáticos’ show and later ‘La Dácada Prodigiosa’.

MONDAY, APRIL 29

08:00: Bell ringing and firecracke­rs set off with music through the streets.

10:00: Music parade with bands from the area.

11:30: Solemn Mass and sermon in honour of the Puríssima Xiqueta.

13:15: Flower offering at the Riberer Monument (the Riberers were local people of Benissa who worked on the land). 14:00: Mascletas.

18:00: Grand parade of floats with music bands.

19:30: Holy mass.

00:30: Grand fireworks display. 01:00: Music band La Fiesta perform.

TUESDAY, APRIL 30

08:00: Firecracke­rs set off with music through the streets. 08:30: Holy mass.

11:00: Bouncy castles for children in the children’s park. 13:30: Paella contest in Jaume I Square for everybody, with interestin­g prizes for the three best paellas.

17:30: Fancy parade and children's entertainm­ent show. 19:00: Children’s entertainm­ent by La Glup band in the main square.

19:00: Dancing evening in the social centre Bernia.

20:00: Youngsters night. Multiple performanc­es by a selection of bands and singers.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1

08:30: Holy mass.

11:00: Bouncy castles and Carretons (false bulls for children) in the children’s park. 18:30: Bull running.

23:30: Bull running.

THURSDAY, MAY 2

19:00: Bull running.

23:00: Bull running.

00:30: DJ party in the Glorieta Joaquín Piera park.

FRIDAY, MAY 3

10:00: Bull running.

18:30: Bull running.

23:30: Bull running.

00:00: Correfocs (firecracke­rs set off in the streets)

01:00: DJ Party in the Glorieta Joaquín Piera park.

SATURDAY, MAY 4

09:00: Bull running.

11:00: Bouncy castles in Calle San Pedro and Carretons (false bulls for children) in the children’s park.

14:00: Giant Paella with music bands.

16:30: Dance and party with music groups Matrix, Empopados and Kike Jaen.

18:00: Bull running.

20:00: Bull running.

SUNDAY, MAY 5

08:00: Firecracke­rs set off with music through the streets. 10:00: Music parade with music bands from the region. 14:00: Fireworks.

18:00: Concert by the choral group Orfeón Cantabile of Alicante in the Parish Church. 18:30: Children's theatre play ‘La rateta de colors’

20:00: Fiesta closing show in the main square.
