Guerrero's contemporary mythology

- By Barry Wright bwright@cbnews.es

AN EXHIBITION by the artist Susana Guerrero – El mal en mí (the evil in me) – is taking place at Elche museum of contemporary art (MACE) until July 15.

The exhibition contains 25 sculptures, 10 drawings, four engravings and three installations that form a vision of the Elcheborn artist’s seven years of creativity.

She has constructed her own contemporary mythology by merging materials, textures and chromatics to form a ‘symbolic language of poetic tension that connects the emotional and sensory visual experience, whose guiding thread links popular myths and legends with the anthropology and narration of the everyday’

During the inauguration the artist spoke of the ‘three pillars’ that always appear in her work – popular legends, mythology and traditions, and superstitions, which are united with the genealogy of the materials and the origins and symbolic poetic influence that they bring. These materials are collected one day, only to be processed and used another. The third pillar contains the everyday things that happen around her, things that are ‘united by pain, such as the exorcism and transformation of things’.

Elche mayor Carlos González visited the exhibition, which covers several floors of the museum.

He noted that he was interested in the ‘conception of the different pieces’ and stressed that overall it is ‘disruptive, unpredictable and avantgarde’ and encouraged all people to visit.

MACE is situated at Plaza del Raval, Elche and is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10.0014.00 and 15.0018.00 and Sundays and public holidays in the morning only. It is closed on Mondays.

General admission is €2. .
