- By David Stockton membership@u3acalpe.org travel@u3acalpe.org www.u3acalpe

Our meeting had 61 people attending; the membership team had 50 renewals and 9 new members signed up.

Our speaker was Mr John Hopwood who gave us an amusing and informative illustrated talk about the history of the bicycle from it’s very early beginning as a two wooden wheel push along very like the ones the children use to-day. Over the years the improvements from wooden wheels to metal and then rubber for comfort over cobbles.

The bicycle was instrumental in changing the clothing fashion for female riders, i.e. chain guards for long dresses and latterly trousers for women called ‘Knickerbockers’.

The bicycle was so important in China and millions were produced called the ‘Flying Pidgeon’. You will have heard the song ‘9 million bicycles in Beijing’. well it was true.

We would like to thank John as he made the talk fun and we have all learned new facts about the common bicycle.

Our next meeting is on Thursday May 16 at the Sol Ifach hotel. Doors open at 10.00, to renew or join Calpe U3A, the travel team are on hand to book a day trip or short holiday for you. Also speak to the groups’ leader Pam or book your next ‘Just us girls lunch’ with Val.

The meeting starts at 11.00am after the short report from the committee members our speaker will be welcomed.

Our speaker will be Gamma from ‘DELETED’ who will give us a talk about Facebook, how to use a strong password and many tips as how to use Facebook to your best advantage while keeping secure.
