In at the deep end for pool plan

Jávea indoor facility budget now grows to €5million

NEW plans for Jávea’s longawaited indoor municipal swimming pool have seen the budget grow to €5million to allow it to be large enough to host competitions.

The town hall will be asked to approve architect’s plans at its next meeting; the project has already been given a green light by a planning committee.

However, concerns about the rising cost of the pool were raised - the original and less ambitious plan was expected to cost around €3.5m, paid for by the regional government.

The local authority will ask Valencia for the additional funding or invest its own funds for the construction which is expected to take 742 days including the tender process.

The regional government took over responsibility for building a municipal pool back in 2005 in return for the construction of a ‘trinquet court’ - a local Valencia sport but nothing happened for over a decade.

And now the local authority has decided to expand the project; in addition to public swimming and therapeutic uses, it was felt important to create a swimming club and take part in competitions.

The facility will be built on land behind the Miguel Buiges sports centre in Jávea port and consist of two pools - the larger one 25x12.5m and a second 12.5x10m, suitable for swimming lessons and therapeutic use.

In addition, the enlarged plans include an expanded viewing gallery; changing rooms suitable for teams, a gym, and a small cafeteria. The area needed has been increased from 2,000sqm to just over 3,000sqm.
