Benitachell becomes ‘Mount Olympus’

- By Jo Pugh

FOLLOWING the visit of La Vuelta cycling race to the peak of the Cumbre del Sol, Benitachell town hall has released details of their new tourism campaign for cyclists, named “Benitatxell Olimp Cyclist”.

Launched by the department of tourism, the new website www.olimpciclista.com includes accommodation, gastronomy, places to visit, and of course, cycling routes. It also demonstrates a clear commitment to sustainability and healthy habits.

The Puig de la Llorença, at the peak of the Cumbre del Sol, is 423m high and has already become a mythical cycling peak.

Last weekend, the cycling teams of the Vuelta once again ascended the demanding slopes of the mountain, reaching 26% gradients. According to the town hall, the Puig de la Llorença is the ‘Mount Olympus’ of cycling. The new website covers cycling routes adapted to all levels. It also highlights typical and healthy food from the area and the cultural and natural and scenic beauty of Benitachell.

“The brand was born to promote cycling tourism which grows every year. It is a healthy and sustainable tourism, and respects nature. But in addition, of course, it was used to promote our town during the passage of the Vuelta, and will be integrated as an appendix to other tourism campaigns and events in order to discover the tourism potential of the town”, explained Bisquert.

“The idea of creating the brand came about after meeting with hoteliers and tourist accommodation entrepreneurs who told me that cyclists are potential customers throughout the year. The brand will allow hoteliers and restaurateurs to be known in this sporty and healthy tourism sector”, Bisquert concluded.
