Sunken boat recovered to investigate death
Guardia Civil divers raise vessel that capsized off Orihuela Costa in July
THE GUARDIA Civil have also been busy at sea this summer, having recently salvaged a sunken boat after one of the passengers died and rescued two people from another boat after the engines caught fire.
A spokesman for the force explained that a recreational boat that can be rented without any qualifications had capsized and sunk at Cala Capitán in Orihuela Costa on July 16.
There had been five people aboard at the time, including a 61-year old man from León who died, and the investigation is being handled by the Guardia Civil in Pilar de la Horadada.
To carry this out properly, it was necessary to recover the boat, for which they called in the force’s provincial maritime service and subaquatic specialists group (GEAS).
After several days of searching, the boat was found on August 12, then refloated and removed from the sea at the Marina Internacional in Torrevieja on August 20 so that the officers could continue with their investigation.
The same provincial maritime service officers, noted the spokesman, were patrolling in their boat, the Río Ladra, when they heard a May Day call from two people who were approximately six nautical miles from the mouth of the marina at Santa Pola.
The passengers, who were a man and a woman and both Spanish, had called because smoke was coming out of their boat’s engines.
The Guardia Civil responded immediately and rescued the pair, who were completely unharmed, and towed their boat back to the port.
