Elite athletes train in Alfaz del Pi

- By Jo Pugh

The athletics track of Alfaz del Pi has been chosen by the runner-up in the Spanish pentathlon, Patricia Ortega, to prepare for her participation in the next Spanish Athletics Championships, which takes place from August 31 to September 1 in La Nucía. It is a competition which will bring more than 700 national athletes to the town.

Ortega will spend the next two weeks in l'Alfas training to achieve her goals in the next Spanish Championship. Elected best athlete in the La Rioja region of Spain in 2018, and at the last Spanish indoor championships held in Antequera, she took the silver medal in pentathlon and bronze in 60 metres hurdles.

The Riojan heptathlete is well acquainted with the facilities of l'Alfas del Pi, having chosen them for several years running to perform her training.

Patricia Ortega is not the only talented athlete to choose the venue, as she is sharing the facilities with the French sprinter Jimmy Vicaut, a specialist in 100 and 200 metres, and with Amaury Golitin, a promising young French sprinter who competes in the 100 metres.

The two French athletes are preparing for the World Athletics Championships, which will take place from September 27 to October 6 in Doha, Qatar. They are accompanied by their coach Dimitri Demonire, a former professional athlete and sprinter in the 100-metre category.

Many elite athletes choose l'Alfas to carry out their training, especially during the winter months, due to the good weather and the extraordinary facilities. There is an athletics track equal to that found in most Olympic stadiums, natural and artificial turf football fields, a golf course, a cricket driving range, as well as hotel facilities which have contributed to the success of sports tourism and the use of the venue.
