A young sailor from Calpe achieved runner-up in the World class Laser 4.7 sailing competition, which took place between August 16 and 23 in the Canadian city of Kingston. Lara Himmes (pictured) of RCN Calpe, completed a total of 11 races, ranging from qualifiers to the final.

The consistency and high standards of Himmes were reflected after the six days of competition, in which during her first race she came in at 4th position. The second race was disappointing for her, as she reached 17th, but her determination saw her improve markedly during each race, and little by little, she began to climb the podium.

Himmes at one point almost had the winning cup in her hands, as after the first two days, she managed to second place, tied for points with the first on the table, the Italian Sara Savelli, who in turn yielded the next day to the Swiss woman Anja Von Allmen.

Himmes said goodbye to Canada with a second place in the women's category with 60 points. The title was taken by the Swiss Von Allmen with 37 points, while the bronze went to the Italian Savelli with 75 points.

The Valencian community expedition to Canada was completed by Ana Clavero, Saphia Hodeib and Kirstin Roper, all from Calpe's RCN, and Mariano Cebrián (CN Benidorm). Clavero managed to conclude in the 33rd position of the general race with 292 points. Hodeib and Roper achieved positions 38 and 39 respectively, with Roper also gaining 9th in the under 16’s category.

Cebrián , on the other hand, also had a brilliant performance in Kingston to achieve a more than deserving 16th place overall and with very good numbers in general, but with a BFD (black flag) in the 3rd race and a RET (Retired) in the penultimate race in the final series, it deprived him of achieving a better position, not only in the general category, but also in the under sixteen’s, where he achieved a more than brilliant fourth place.

The title in this category went to the Turkish Derin Baytur while the World Sceptre was taken by the Italian Niccolo Nordera with 27 points followed by the Roko Stipanovic coatra with 46 and the bronze for the Slovak Gasper Strahovinik, adding 57 points.
