San Miguel Golf Society

- SMGS at Lorca. August 21

Captain Tony’s Tours took a total of 22 players including guests on an awayday trip this week to Lorca, a fortunate change to the schedule as it turned out because we enjoyed a dry day while most of the Torrevieja area was hit by heavy rain until early afternoon. Lorca Golf resort isn’t a regular on our rotation because of the travelling distance but thanks to Mick Cook’s quiz, the outbound leg passed in no time.

The course staff at Lorca made us very welcome and most players found the layout intriguing, if a little dried out and untidy around the edges. The greens were furry and had been left long deliberately after a recent tining. Understandable for the time of year, perhaps, but the holes desperately needed re-cutting; on some greens it was like holing out down a rabbit burrow.

On the positive side, we had the course largely to ourselves and nearly everyone got around in less than four hours. Scoring was respectable with a couple of outstanding numbers topping the charts. In Silver division, Chris Wren (30) was third behind Mike Greatorex (35) and Bob Dixon wiped the floor with a superb 42 points.

Spencer Andrews (35) was third in Gold, Bruce Boswell just pipping him on countback. Gareth Davies took first place honours with a 37 point haul.

Nearest the pins, sponsored by the Property Shop, were won by Mick Cook, Robert Dixon, David Alderdice and Gareth Davies.

The Abacus award for persistence over excellence finally went to Peter Dulson despite the best efforts of our scorer to give it to Jacs Boswell. She reluctantly handed back the bottle of wine to sponsor Mike of Mike’s IPTV so that Peter could savour the fruits of his labour. Maybe next time, Jacs?

Please contact us for the following week. There are places available and bookings should be made via the website using the new system which Robin has explained in detail in recent emails to all members.
