International tennis tournament in La Nucia

- By Jo Pugh

This week and until Sunday, September 1, La Nucía hosts the ‘David Ferrer Europe Junior Tour sub 14’ tennis competition. In this tournament, 170 tennis players all aged under fourteen, from 55 countries around the world, are competing. The tournament is included in the ‘Tennis Europe Junior Tour’ circuit which takes place in cities such as Istanbul, Brussels, Prague and Warsaw.

It is the first time in history that La Nucía is host to a tournament of this type. Among participants and companions, more than 700 people are expected to pass through the Camilo Cano sports centre.

Iván Helguera, a former Real Madrid player has also been attending the venue to watch this competition, as his son, Lucca Helguera, is taking part. The former footballer praised the new courts “I think it is impressive what La Nucía is doing with the sport, because it is growing a lot and it is difficult to make this type of investment with sport and promote sport among young people” he commented.

This international tournament has a ‘category one’ rating. This means that there will be singles matches for males and females, and double male and double female games. Seventy players in this category will play on the clay courts at the David Ferrer tennis academy in La Nucía, located next to the new ‘Estadi Olímpic Camilo Cano’.

During October and November, La Nucía will host two more tournaments, the ITF Junior David Ferrer-Nucia Sub18 from October 19-27, and the ITF Senior City of La Nucia ATF tournament from November 4 - 10. Both events will position La Nucía in the tennis scene, both from a training and professional perspective.

Professional tennis player David Ferrer chose La Nucía for the construction of his tennis academy. It is being built next to the La Nucía athletics stadium, although the five clay tennis courts were already in use by July. The 20,000 m2 complex represents a private investment of €491,000 from Ferrer. When finished, it will have eight courts, five clay and three normal. The focal point will be a central clay court with a capacity for 2,000 spectators.

“This is one of the most important tournaments on the international scene, and with this, La Nucía is in addition to capitals throughout Europe. David Ferrer is committed to La Nucía and his academy at these facilities makes us very proud of this project”, said Bernabé Cano, mayor of La Nucía.
