Climate change law on the way
The Valencia government has started the process to draw up a climate change and energy transition law. Councillor for farming, rural development and the ecological transition, Mireia Mollà noted that the main aims of the legislation are a 40% reduction in carbon/contaminating emissions by 2030 and to produce all energy from renewable sources by 2050. Sra Mollà noted that the law would bring ‘incentives and sanctions’ and will guarantee in the medium and long term ‘a transition to a lowcarbon economy and one which is resilient to climate change’.
“This shows the determination of this government to approve strong legislation to fight against climate change,” she said. She explained that an initial public consultation phase will take place until November 6, which has been published in the regional government’s official bulletin (DOGV), marking the beginning of the drawing up of this important law.
Regional secretary for climate change, Paula Tuzón explained that once the official consultation period is over ‘the participation of citizens and all the sectors implicated’ will continue. She noted that the principal objective of the law is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to move towards a zero-emission economy which is also ‘competitive, innovative and efficient in the use of resources’.
Fossil fuel consumption will be replaced by a ‘decentralised energy production system’ based on renewable energies.
The law will also seek to reduce the impact of climate change on vulnerable areas and ecosystems produced by the adverse effects of this phenomenon, she noted.
This will be done through planning and adapting infrastructure and buildings.
