DOG owners will be hit in the wallet if they allow their pets to foul the streets as Calpe introduces new byelaws to keep the town clean.

The legislation looks set to be passed by the town hall on Monday when the council holds its first meeting of the New Year.

A range of fines from €30 to €1,000 covers a series of offences involving animals and insiders told CBN the police will enforce the campaign to control pet pollution.

Under the proposed legislation, people failing to carry bags to pick up after their pet or a bottle of water to dilute urine will be fined between €30 and €600; feeding animals outside designated areas carries a penalty of between €30 and €600.

However, pet owners who do not pick up their dog’s excrement or fail to dilute its urine can be fined between €600 and €1,000.

Town hall consultant Carole Saunders said: “We are going to make it a byelaw that people will have to carry bags to pick up faeces and a bottle of water to wash down urine.

“There will be fines; some residents who live in apartments in Calpe have really big dogs and they always do everything in the same place - the pavements can be a real mess.

“And we are planning to really enforce these measures. We plan to have a hard hitting campaign to try and stop this problem.”

She added: “Sometimes to smell of urine is dreadful, absolutely disgusting. It can be especially an awful problem in summer when we don’t get much rain here.”
